Abstract

With high demands to redefine the goals and domain of journalism education amid the dramatic changes in the media environment, the present study seeks ways to bring disruptive innovation to undergraduate-level journalism education. Considering that journalism education integrates theory and professional skills, we conducted a series of in-depth interviews with 10 experts who have a broad understanding of both academia and the field of professional journalism. Results show that Korean journalism education is facing various difficulties, including the lack of core value education, insufficient journalism courses stemming from a department-store-style curriculum, and shortage of faculty who has expertise in teaching professional skills. Respondents answered that the journalism curriculum should be designed to increase students’ domain knowledge about journalism. The courses offered should strengthen students’ abilities to produce original content, increase their understanding of professional journalistic ethics, and enhance their knowledge of data science and the user-based media environment. In addition, courses related to freedom of speech, civil rights, and citizenship education should be provided as part of a liberal arts curriculum. As realistic solutions, a publication of an anthology of good news reports, facilitation of active communication between academia and professional journalism, and development of a model journalism curriculum were suggested.
