Abstract

The present study examined the relationship between news formats and the extent of in-depth reporting, positing that one of the key reasons behind the decrease in public broadcasting news viewership is the routine-based production of similar types of news. For this, researchers compared the main news programs of KBS and BBC, the representative public service broadcasters of South Korea and the UK. Findings show that the Korean-style formal format is still prevalent in Korean news—a 127-second-long report with two sound-bites, which tends to be pre-recorded (91%). In terms of the thematic format, news reports were disproportionately focused on social affairs (41.9%) and political (32%) news. Researchers also found that, in terms of in-depth reporting, KBS news is far behind BBC’s. Among the three dimensions of in-depth reporting (objectivity, diversity, and professionalism), KBS news showed a lower level of objectivity and professionalism. Ultimately, researchers tested whether the Korean-style news format has meaningful effects on the level of in-depth reporting, and results show that Korean-style news tends to be event-driven, with a low analytic approach. In sum, researchers conclude that the Korean-style news format is likely to have negative effects on the extent of in-depth reporting, particularly in practicing interpretive and analytic reporting. Thus, we suggest that Korean public broadcasters need to change the existing practice of news production, in order to reconnect with news consumers. Further practical implications are discussed.
