Abstract

This study investigated the reasons and processes of news selection, in which users chose news media and content in a multiple-media environment. And this study examined what type of news users use and what its specific attributes are. To this end, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 13 news users in their 20s to 60s, and analyzed the results using the grounded theory method. According to the research results, the news selection process of news users was heavily influenced by the characteristics of the media and news content. Further, it was found that the social conditions and social contexts of news users were affecting the selection of news media and content. The media selection process was mainly influenced by the media usage habits, that were adopted in the process of growth, and the ease of access in individual's social space. In other words, familiarity from childhood, the characteristics of the environment and social space, and the value of the news influenced media selection. In addition, the choice of news content was influenced by the relevance of the news to users, reliability of news, and political inclination. News users actively search for information, avoid specific news content, use biased news, and spread news through sharing. Through this process, news users continued to use and combine the existing media but there was also a shift to other news media. The types of news users' use of news were found to be Entertainment news type, Life Information news type, Navigational news type, and Confirmation-biased news type. News users of Life Information/Navigational news type mainly use the existing media rather than the new media, and they use new media as a supplement when additional information is needed. the users of Entertainment/Confirmation-biased news type have a high probability that the media or platform mainly used depends on the news content. For Entertainment news type news users, the convenience of the news media or their interest in the news could influence the choice of the media or platform. Confirmation-biased news users were able to change news media or platforms according to their political views and the political party they supported. Through this study, news user's news selection process can appear in a variety of ways depending on the social context. And it is not an unconditional flood of sensational news that enhances the competitiveness of news in a multiple-media environment. Instead, it is necessary to provide news content suitable for individuals by examining the selection process and type of news users.
