Abstract

This research examines the measures of fear of isolation, as theorized in the spiral of silence thesis, used across previous studies. It categorized the measures into three groups: dispositional, situational and argumentative. It then hypothesizes these groups as mediators between perceived opinion climate and willingness to express opinions. The hypotheses were tested on the issue of minimum wage in South Korea by an experiment in which participants were put in either two: a face-to-face debate(N = 367) or an online debate(N = 327). The results showed that dispositional fear of isolation affected situational fear of isolation; however, situational fear of isolation did not mediate the effect of opinion climate on willingness to express opinions. Second, debate success expectancy mediated the effect of opinion climate on willingness to express opinions. Third, relative argument strength affected the debate success expectancy. Fourth, attitude certainty affected the debate success expectancy. Theoretical implications from the findings are discussed.
